Statutes of Limitations in Colorado
| The time limits for legal actions for particular instances of wrongdoing are listed below. Important: This listing is highly simplified and we don't guarantee its accuracy. | |
| 1-year limitations: | |
|
Assault, battery, false imprisonment, false arrest, libel, slander, prison escape, motor vehicle repair, certain acts of negligence, fraud, certain misrepresentations, minor traffic offenses, legal actions against public safety officers (sheriffs, police officers, firefighters, etc.) |
|
| 2-year limitations: | |
|
Wrongful death, legal actions against a public or governmental entity or employee (except public safety officers) or a veterinarian. Failure to instruct or warn. Damages caused by designers, builders, or inspectors of unfinished improvements to real property (a 6-year limitation applies to finished improvements). Damages caused by manufacturers or sellers of products. All legal actions for which no other period of limitation applies. |

3-year limitations: |

|
Contracts, fraud, certain misrepresentations, concealment, or deceit. Credit wrongdoing, certain auto repair lawsuits, damage from motor vehicle accidents, takings by the government (for example, private property taken for highway construction), recovery of excessive tax refunds by the government. |

5-year limitations: |

Certain criminal and civil actions. |

6-year limitations: |

Unpaid debts, unpaid rent. |
